TV comedy Little Britain has led to teachers suffering homophobic abuse in the classroom, it was claimed yesterday.
The lycra-clad character Daffyd was blamed for a surge in calls to a charity helpline from victims who fear they are becoming figures of fun.
A quarter of those calling the Educational Action Challenging Homophobia line were teachers, the charity said. It added TV portrayals of gay people are making teachers an easy target for children and singled out Little Britain character Daffyd ‘I’m the only gay in the village’ Thomas, for criticism.
Jonathan Charlesworth, project manager at EACH, said the programme is a ‘really big problem’.
He said adults laugh at Daffyd because they can see his claim is ludicrous but children watch it and liken real gay people to him. ‘It is very funny to someone who is 38 but what if you’re 14? What they see is a one-dimensional character that lets people take the mickey out of a gay person,’ he added.
