Please come home, Poland begs its builders

Poland is facing a growing shortage of builders, electricians and other skilled tradesmen to work on prestige national projects including football stadiums and a World Expo site.

The country’s deputy culture minister has appealed to tens of thousands of Poles who have flocked to Britain over the past three years to return home to help build their own country and fill widening gaps in the nation’s workforce.

The Polish Government hopes that hosting the World Expo fair in 2012, as well as co-hosting the Euro 2012 football championships, will help put Poland on the map as a dynamic and fast-growing modern economy.

But with wages there still lagging far behind western Europe and huge numbers of migrant builders being hired to work on London’s 2012 Olympic venues, officials fear they will struggle to get the prestigious facilities built successfully.
