FOUR men are today starting long jail sentences after taking part in terrifying, racially-motivated mob violence when rioting erupted on the streets of Birmingham.
During the violence in October 2005 in Lozells and Handsworth, one man was murdered, many were attacked and shops were looted.
The outbreak followed unsubstantiated rumours of a gang rape by a group of Asian men on a black schoolgirl, the court heard.
Moses Kibuye, 41, of Leopold Street, Highgate, was given an indeterminate sentence for the protection of the public after being found guilty of riot and racially-aggravated damage to property.
Andrew Walker, 41, of Windmill Lane, Smethwick, was jailed for eight years, after being convicted of riot and wounding with intent.
Marcell Brown, 26, of Camden Street, Winson Green, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment after being found guilty of violent disorder and racially-aggravated damage to property, while a 21-year-old man from Newtown, who can not be identified, who was convicted of riot and had admitted an unconnected charge of robbery, was jailed for four-and-a-half years.
