CHRISTIAN dad Michael Simkins, who is embroiled in a row with his son’s school over the way that Islam is taught in RE lessons, has admitted he is a member of the British National Party.

But the 45-year-old from Arnolds Mead, Corsham, said that did not determine his beliefs that RE classes at The Corsham School were one sided.

“I am a member of the BNP, but I would feel the same whether I was Tory, Lib Dem or Labour,” he said. “It’s not about politics. It’s more of a pro-Christian thing.

“I don’t have a problem with Islam. I just wish they would teach it properly, in a balanced way.”

Mr Simpkins, who worships with his family at St Bartholomew’s Church in Corsham, revealed to the Gazette last week he was considering removing son Tristian, 14, from RE lessons because he felt they focused too much on Islam and conflicted with the family’s Christian beliefs.

He claimed Tristian was sent to the art department to recover his book after he wrote God Save the Queen on it, and Mr Simpkins said he was phoned at home when Tristian was reading the Bible during a RE lesson.
