TONY Blair was last night planning to mount an extraordinary defence of the government’s issuing of peerages to wealthy tycoons who bankroll its policies, arguing that such honours are legitimate.
The Prime Minister was preparing to claim that it is right for ministers to recognise “philanthropist” businessmen who give their time and money to running controversial city academy schools by handing them a seat in the House of Lords.
