THREE thousand junior doctors - trained at a cost of £250,000 each - are unemployed, it was claimed yesterday.

A third of them have given up trying to find work in the NHS and have decided to go private or move abroad, said the British Medical Association.

To train as a doctor, a student spends a minimum five years at medical school.

They then have a year as a pre-registration house officer followed by a minimum two years as a senior house officer.

Dr Jo Hilborne, of the BMA, said: “These are people who are desperate to work for the NHS and have spent years of their lives in training at a huge cost to the taxpayer.

“Patients’ healthcare needs are growing, the country is still short of doctors and we should be doing everything we can to prevent their skills from being wasted.”

I have been living in London now for three months and all I seem to hear about it the lack of training positions for junior doctors in the UK.

I am from New Zealand and before coming to the UK I worked in a District Health Board, one of 21 across the country. I saw many UK trained doctors take up really good training posts and many of them have fallen in love with them health system/country.

Junior doctors get a lot benefits in New Zealand in regards to hours and conditions of work. I do not see why these doctors do not look into New Zealand as a career move.

I know of vacant positions all over New Zealand and they are currently taking applications for registrar positions.

If anyone is interested in New Zealand as a career move I am more than willing to help/discuss this.
