Police probe poll fraud claims

Detectives are to investigate more than 250 cases of alleged electoral fraud in Bradford, it has been revealed.

Two men have already been arrested and questioned by West Yorkshire Police in connection with an inquiry into postal ballot irregularities in the city.

Bradford City Council said that 252 applications for postal votes had been passed to police after checks by electoral staff aroused suspicions.

Acting Returning Officer Philip Robinson said an “urgent review” of electoral registration and postal voting should be carried out before the next elections in 2006.

He said: “A total of 252 cases have now been referred to the West Yorkshire Police for further investigation as to whether any electoral fraud has occurred.
