THREE MEN, including a former Tower Hamlets councillor, have been jailed for siphoning off £45,500 from a sports scheme to help vulnerable people.
The Youth Action Scheme (YAS) was set up in 1995 to promote sport, leisure and recreational activities in the borough. Between 1995 and 2003 it received public funding of £945,000 from a wide range of sources, including the Ocean NDC, Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) and New Beginnings New Settlements Ltd (NBNS) for which Tower Hamlets Council was the accountable body.
The council severed its links with YAS in July 2003 following receipt of auditors’ reports.
Chief executive of the scheme and former Tower Hamlets councillor Nasir Uddin, 33, of Cotswold Gardens, East Ham, was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Southwark Crown Court on Friday (June 9) after pleading guilty to stealing nearly £30,000 from YAS in 14 counts of theft.
His brother, Ain Uddin, 32, of East India Dock Road, Limehouse, also worked at YAS, and admitted four similar charges relating to just over £10,000. He was jailed for 11 months.
