EU afraid of free press!

While EU officials keep moaning about human rights and freedom of press in countries like Turkey and Russia, it keeps pushing for new law restricting free speech. A couple of months ago, the French minister of “culture”, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, wanted to restrict the right to post news on blogs. Only people who were accredited by the government should be allowed to report news. His worry was that people might report false news! Doesn’t that remind us of Orwell’s 1984 minster of truth…

Now the EU has a new proposal: outlaw video blogs in all EU countries. Only people with a license should be able to post videos on the net. This, of course, would only be a first step towards total information control.

We use to have free speech at the time when the governments had total control of the media. Since that’s not the case anymore, governments try very hard to keep their grip on information. They have all kinds of excuses like: child porn, hate and even the worst of all (in their eyes at least)… racism!!
